Simple Flick of the Pole and

Its Function to Stabilize Our Core

A few years back, I was asked to do a TV episode on bump skiing. I was thrilled to join my friend and legend Andy Mill for his weekly ski show. This shot is from the show we did on Aspen Mountain and it points out one of CM's key concepts!

Notice how Andy and I both have our pole tips in front of our hands. We are not reaching downhill with our hands for the pole touch. If we did, the reach would cause our core to cross above our momentum (past our direction of travel). This core rotation would in turn make our skis lose their grip and wash out, sending us skidding down the hill.

With our pole tips in front of our hands (flicking our wrists), we stabilize our core and stay connected to our momentum. This countered position keeps us spring-loaded to respond with intention. This little flick for the pole touch allows us to Dance with Gravity.

I have seen this 'flick' (rather than reach) transform clients' skiing!
